World Suicide Prevention Day — “Creating Hope Through Action”

Every year on September 10, the world recognizes World Suicide Prevention Day — a

day dedicated to raising awareness, reducing stigma, and reminding us that every life

holds immeasurable value.

At Flourishing Minds Wellness Center, we believe that healing begins with connection.

This year’s global theme, “Creating Hope Through Action,” is more than a message —

it’s a mission we live out daily.

Why This Day Matters

Suicide remains one of the leading causes of death worldwide, affecting people of every

age, background, and community.

Behind every statistic is a story — a parent, a friend, a child — who needed compassion

more than judgment, and connection more than silence.

For those struggling, it’s not about wanting to die — it’s about wanting the pain to stop.

Our role as a community is to help them find reasons to keep living and paths toward

healing.

Our Commitment to Prevention

At Flourishing Minds, we approach suicide prevention with a foundation of education,

early intervention, and ongoing support.

Through our counseling services, after-school programs, peer support, and recovery

initiatives, we create safe, stigma-free spaces where individuals can express how they

truly feel — without fear.

We also provide training for staff and community members to recognize the warning

signs of suicidal thoughts and connect individuals to help quickly and compassionately.

Recognizing the Warning Signs

If someone you know shows any of the following, reach out:

  • Talking about feeling hopeless, trapped, or like a burden

  • Withdrawing from friends, school, or usual activities

  • Increased use of alcohol or drugs

  • Extreme mood swings or sudden calm after distress

  • Expressing thoughts of wanting to die or “disappear”

A simple check-in — “How are you really doing?” — can open a door that saves a life.

How You Can Create Hope

Listen without judgment. Sometimes the greatest act of love is just being present.

  • Share resources — normalize asking for help.

  • Spread positive messages of resilience and recovery on social media.

  • Attend local vigils or prevention walks to show community solidarity.

  • Model self-care and emotional openness with your family, coworkers, and peers.

You Are Not Alone

If you or someone you know is struggling, help is available 24/7:

  • 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline — Call or text 988 for free, confidential support.

  • Crisis Text Line — Text HOME to 741741.

  • Maryland Helpline — Dial 211 and press 1 for local mental health and substance us

Every conversation, every connection, every act of kindness can be a step toward

saving a life.
