Back to School, Back to Balance: Supporting Youth Mental Health

A new school year can bring excitement, but it can also bring anxiety.

New teachers, academic expectations, friendships, bullying, social media, sports, and changing routines can create stress for children and teens.

Parents and caregivers can help by paying attention to changes in sleep, appetite, mood, school performance, social activity, or behavior. Instead of immediately asking, “What’s wrong?” try creating space for conversation.

Ask questions such as: “How have you been feeling about school?” or “Is there anything making this year feel stressful?”

Creating consistent routines, encouraging healthy sleep, limiting overwhelming schedules, and making time for family connection can also help children adjust.

Most importantly, remind young people that they do not have to manage difficult emotions alone.

Flourish Reminder: A healthy school year isn’t only about grades. Emotional wellness matters too.
